About  Paul Carty is 19, good-looking, funny, clever Ð and bored out of his mind. His mother died a year ago. He lives in middle class suburbia with his silently grieving father and feisty young sister, Molly. Carty works as a junior civil servant and spends all his wages on clubs, records, football and gigs. It's at a Bunnymen gig that he meets Elvis. Elvis changes everything.
He's part of a gang called The Pack. The Pack are notorious; they dress in a cultish, almost effeminate style that's at odds with the boneheads and bootboys they fight against. They have androgynous wedge haircuts worn with Fred Perry shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills training shoes. For as long as he has been going to football, Carty has been fascinated by The Pack. Now Elvis seems to be offering him a way in.
Except he isn't. For all that Carty lionises The Pack, Elvis dilutes his idealism. He warns Carty that these lads are nobodies. Elvis is a council estate romantic, a dreamer with big plans about escaping to Berlin, New York, anywhereÉ Anywhere, so long as Carty comes with him. He's been waiting all his life for someone like Carty, someone he can talk with and relate to about art, music, poetry...suicide. They love the same bands - Magazine, Joy Division, Wire - and think the same way; or so Elvis wants to believe. He's smitten with his new mate and plans the big journeys they'll make together.
But Carty soon gets to know the 'other' Elvis - moody, fatalistic and possessive. He throws as many obstacles as he can in Carty's path, whenever he fears he's losing him. Elvis is all too well aware how badly Carty craves the Pack lifestyle, and tries to keep him away - but in spite of all his warnings, Carty's on a collision course, plunging deeper into their dark and vicious world. Elvis can see how Carty's fascination is blinding him, yet he's powerless to pull him back from the brink. Once he's been on his first awayday and sampled the buzz of random violence, Carty just wants more, more, more...
But Carty is never truly accepted by the gang. He's there on sufferance, simply because his sponsor, the psychotic yet enigmatic Elvis is so revered. Their conflict reaches its crisis as Carty tries harder and harder to impress the wild boys, while Elvis sinks deeper into paranoia and jealousy. Something has to break.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo
13 Attendees
Location Alamo Ritz 2
About  Imagine cramming 128 million people onto an island the size of Montana Ð you would be pretty close to replicating the density of Japan. Not surprisingly, space is at a premium and ergonomic design is right up there next to godliness.
Yet, even in Tokyo, the pinnacle of this figurative 'can of sardines,' people of all ages still make room for a little bit of wilderness. It is only fitting that they have become captivated by nature's most efficient invention in space, design and function Ð insects.
Sold live in vending machines and department stores, plastic replicas included as prizes in the equivalent of a McDonald's Happy Meal and the subject of the No. 1 videogame, MushiKing, from the smallest backyard to the top of Mt. Fuji, insects inspire an enthusiasm in Japan seen nowhere else in this world. 'Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo' discovers why Japan developed this rich and enriching social relationship with insects.
Like a detective story, the film untangles the web of influences behind Japan's captivation with insects. It opens in modern-day Tokyo where a single beetle recently sold for $90,000 then slips back to the early 1800s, to the first cricket-selling business and the development of haiku and other forms of insect literature and art. Through history and adventure, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo travels all the way back in time to stories of the fabled first emperor who named Japan the 'Isle of the Dragonflies.'
Along the way the film takes side trips to Zen temples and Buddhist Shrines, nature preserves and art museums in its quest for the inspirations that moved Japan into this fascination while other cultures hurtled off towards an almost universal and profound fear of insects.
Interspersed with the philosophies of one of Japan's best-selling authors and anatomists, Dr. Takeshi Yoro, and laced with poetry and art from Japan's history, this film becomes about much more than insects. 'Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo' is set to the rhythm of traditional Japanese values in its attention to detail, harmony, and the appreciation of the seemingly mundane. It quietly challenges the viewer to observe the world from an uncommon perspective that will shift the familiar to the fantastic and just might change not only the way we think about bugs, but the way we think about life.

About  At times war photographer Robert King resembles a heroic misfit straight out of the pages of Scoop, thrown into the heart of battle, struggling to adapt to the brutal environment he finds himself in. Occasionally comic, often touching, more often dark, Blood Trail, the tale of Robert King, is a unique and personal journey, a film which follows him over 15 years and through three wars.
His journey starts in Sarajevo in 1993, a 23-year-old fresh out of Art College and prepared to dodge bullets on the front line dreaming of a Pulitzer Prize. His dream proves elusive. Fired by his photo agency and struggling to make ends meet, any swashbuckling allusions Robert holds for the career he has chosen quickly evaporate: as he realises this is one of the toughest professions in the world.
Despite himself, Robert stays in the game, over time establishing himself as a respected professional, his work making the front covers of global media titles. Over 15 years Blood Trail records Robert's life from boy to man, to husband and father. It is a biography, which leads from reckless naivety to maturity hardened by war and softened by family. It is a story, which forces Robert to inevitably question why he chose a profession, which involves an endless trail of death and destruction.

About  An aspiring screenwriter from Buenos Aires, he lives in fear of success, STDs and -- especially -- his doorman. We meet Luciano during one of his typically awkward days: he has a narcoleptic attack on the job (he's a children's entertainer, to boot), obsessively calls an HIV helpline after a random sexual encounter and accidentally sends his best friend to the hospital after slamming a door in his face.
Things become even more uncomfortable when Luciano's childhood friend Manuel returns to Buenos Aires from Madrid, where he is the producer of a successful television show called The Paranoids. Manuel is in town to make an Argentine version of the hit, and Luciano becomes especially perturbed when he discovers that he provided the inspiration for the show's main character, who even shares his name.
When Manuel leaves on a business trip to Chile, his beautiful new girlfriend Sofia (JazmÌ n Stuart) decides to stay with Luciano, a turn of events that amounts to a nightmare for her fearful host. At first, Sofia sees Luciano superficially; to her, he is just the paranoid freak her boyfriend has described. After spending time with him, however, she begins to see Luciano for what he is -- a misunderstood, honest and genuine person. In sum, he is the complete opposite of Manuel.

In 2006, the United States Geological Survey estimated there to be more than 200 billion barrels of crude oil resting in beneath western North Dakota, and now oil companies from far and wide are descending on small rural towns across the state with men and machinery in tow. First-time director Noah Hutton takes us to the town of Stanley (population 1300) and captures the change wrought by the unprecedented boom. Through revealing interviews and breathtaking imagery of the northern plains, Crude Independence is a rumination on the future of small town AmericaÑa tale of change at the hands of the global energy market and America's unyielding thirst for oil.

This classic tale of loss and woe features Pablo Ribba (illuminados para el fuego) as Adan the troubadour. Adan's innermost woe drives him from his lonely and tortured existence to the numbing satisfaction of the bottle.
In this world, one can almost hear the tortured cry of a soul in despair as Adan plays the guitar from place to place, his head hung low, his spirits sagging. The weight of the world virtually rests on his small shoulders.
Though, in this case, they are not only shoulders, but the most expressive fingers you have ever seen.

About  The music video "An Evening with Rthrtha" is a high-velocity psychedelic stop-motion animation made from thousands of photos on hundreds of layers using an eclectic array of analog animation techniques. The final result is a horrible/splendid array of bats, butterflies, that depicts "An Evening with Rthrtha".
As the band explained to the directors, "Rthrtha" is a large ancient and convivial pink bat that could fight large beasts on the order of Godzilla and Cthulu, but actually prefers a wild night out with friends.

About  The philosophy of materialism holds that the only thing that can be truly proven to exist is matter. Fundamentally, material composes all things and all phenomena are the result of material interactions; therefore, matter is the only substance and can neither be created or destroyed. Hence, we are all made of only what came before us yet discretely conceived through form; we are all made of earth and sky and stars.
Meridian uses time lapse footage coupled with a live action environment to describe the material connection between the ethereal universe and human perception. Featuring the track "The Daydream" by the ambient artist Tycho, star-scapes intersect a city and a female protagonist in the process of discovery within the context of ordinary life.

Surprising, poignant and at times very funny, The Time of Their Lives reveals the everyday mystery of how very old people experience life and the effects of age on their sense of identity and worth. About  Stanless Steel can leg-press 10,000 pound dump trucks, drive nails through boards with just his bare hands, and can even bend a U.S. penny in his fingersÑa feat no one else in the world can accomplish. These are acts, he feels, not just of physical strength but of mental and emotional strengthÑdemonstrations of the kind of change possible through will-power and perseverance. Yet as Stan reaches middle age, career disappointments and difficult personal relationships begin to test these strengths and force him to struggle with the weaknesses around himÑincluding his own.
Befitting its subject's sense of integrity and artistic purity, Strongman uses a hard-core verite approach and applies it to a thoroughly modern story.

About  As this verite documentary film unfolds, viewers are drawn into an intimate family struggle. Tom Luckey is coping with recent and dramatic changes in his life. A sculptor, Tom was designing a three-story-tall climbable sculpture, the masterpiece of his career building interactive art, when he fell through a window and became paralyzed below his shoulders. Determined to finish his sculpture, Tom turned to his oldest son Spencer, an architect, for help. Spencer sees an opportunity to work with his father and to reclaim his boyhood relationship, which was interrupted by divorce and remarriage. As they try to forge a working relationship from a complex father-son relationship, Tom and Spencer find themselves reeling emotionally during the first year of Tom's paralysis, making working together explosive. Family dynamics are complicated by the fact that Tom's wife, Ettie, and Spencer don't get along. Stepmother and stepson, they become Tom's primary caretakers and companions, but can barely bring themselves to interact with one another. As Tom regains strength and ambition, but not mobility, enabling his artistic work while maintaining independence and sanity becomes a tricky balance for Tom, Spencer, and Ettie. LUCKEY is a portrait of a family in crisis and one man's efforts to create a new life in the wake of a devastating accident.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo

About  Abner Meecham, an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks' home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace. Upon his return, he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Abner's old enemy and his white trash family. Not one to suffer fools or go down easy, Abner moves into the old tenant shack on the property and declares that he won't leave until the farm is returned to his possession. But Lonzo Choat, the new tenant, has no intention to move out or give in to the old man's demands.
This sets up a ruthless grudge match between Abner and Choat, each man right in his own eyes, each too stubborn to give an inch. Angered by his son's betrayal, and haunted by recurring dreams of his long-dead wife, Abner sets about his own path toward reclaiming his life. Lines are drawn, threats are made, and the simmering tension under the Southern sun erupts, inevitably, into savagery.
