Isis Avenue
Location Alamo Lamar 1
About  Isis Avenue intimately documents a 'crime-scene cleanup' crew's excavation of the home left abandoned by its deceased owner in Ingelwood, CA. Shot in a single-camera verite style, the unobtrusive and unanticipated nature of the film's process casts loss, absence and apathy as characters in the aftermath of an unknown woman's death. The pasts of the professionals who specialize in homicides, suicides, decomposition and hoarding cases are as hauntingly present as that of the departed. In an era of reality subjects, Isis Avenue stands in subtle opposition, in process and form, to the inevitable reality series soon to champion the subject of crime-scene cleanup. The entire filmmaking process was performed in 17 hrs 47 min; a conceptual sliver of time in the white light of Angelino anonymity.

About  Grizzled morning radio legend Grant Mazzy has pissed off a lot of people in the radio business. That's why he finds himself announcing school closures and traffic reports from the basement headquarters of 'The Beacon' in the icy remote hamlet of Pontypool. On his way to work on a particularly frigid Valentine's Day morning, Mazzy is accosted by a dazed and mumbling woman banging at his car window who then suddenly disappears into the blizzard. As the workday continues, Mazzy and his radio station staff slowly discover that this seemingly innocuous occurrence may be linked to bizarre outbreaks of murder and bloody mayhem throughout the town. Veteran character actor Stephen McHattie (Hollis Mason/Nite Owl in the upcoming Watchmen movie) delivers a brilliant performance within the structure of writer Tony Burgess' taut War-of-the-Worlds-inspired script. Pontypool deftly sidesteps genre clichés and conventions, delivers plenty of white-knuckle suspense and enough post-movie-conversation fodder to last you to the end of the festival.

About  Dear Texas Highways is a cinematic sequence of still photographs that illustrate a darkling letter written to Texas Highways magazine.
The narrated letter is a fractured rumination of a disintegrating consciousness.
The photographic images are an interpretation of the visual climate thatthe narrator navigates over the arc of a single day on the road.
Dear Texas Highways is at once an absurdly cryptic suicide note and an appeal for redemption and mercy.

This raw, action-filled revenge drama, which received awards for both Best Australian Film and Best Australian Director at the 2008 Melbourne Underground Film Festival, signals the emergence of a serious new talent. The Horseman tells the story of Christian Forteski (played by veteran Australian actor Peter Marshall) whose drug addicted daughter dies after appearing in an amateur porn video. Christian deals with his grief by burning, kicking, smashing and stabbing his way through the network of pornographers involved in the video. The Horseman is a lean, tight film that boils down the revenge formula to its most essential, time-tested elements: an engaging story, interesting characters, and a powerful dose of skull-pounding violence

About  Not content to bank on the power of a salacious title, director Phil Claydon's LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS packs as much of a punch as the name implies. Matthew Horne and James Corden, the comedy duo behind the award-winning BBC comedy series GAVIN AND STACEY, are two hapless losers whose idyllic country holiday is shattered by the arrival of an army of thirsty lesbian vampires. James Corden owns the film with a non-stop barrage of rapid-fire tom-foolery and Paul McGann (the 'I' of WITHNAIL AND I) chews every inch of scenery as the vicar with a hearse heavy with undead-slaying devices. With heaping helpings of gratuitous skin, violence and onscreen beer consumption, LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS seems tailor made for a witching hour debut at the Alamo Drafthouse.

In an era of reality subjects, Isis Avenue stands in subtle opposition, in process and form, to the inevitable reality series soon to champion the subject of crime-scene cleanup. About  A feisty descendant of Betty Boop tells her no-good boyfriend to hit the road, her litany of complaints set to the barrelhouse rhythm of Fats Waller. "You're Outa Here" starts with stride-master Dick Hyman playing the high-voltage intro to "The Minor Drag." Our animated leading lady strides forth to make her case for the immediate ejection of her boyfriend from their apartment. Her cat clock, dog and pet piranha also demand his exit. She attempts to oust him from his Barcalounger, badgers him to start packing, and recounts his various shortcomings. He's lazy, he sleeps around, he called her doorman "Pancho" and her Uncle Bob "a queer." The film includes two rotoscope dance sequences. This Neo-Soundie was sung by Lorraine Feather, who also wrote the lyrics, and animated by George Griffin.

About  An extraordinary look at 4 blind teens. The parallel stories of 2 freshmen and 2 seniors unfold over the course of one dynamic year at the Texas School for the Blind in Austin. EYES offers a fresh perspective on growing up and fitting in.
Distilled from over 250 hours of footage, this experiential doc captures a textured portrait of its characters. Director Keith Maitland worked closely with the film's subjects to produce sequences of stylized rotoscopic animation to complement the film's observational aesthetic.
Forced to confront the world without sight, they share their thoughts, their perceptions, their inner-visions of the outer world. You cannot understand their perceptions without challenging your own.
How do you see yourself when you can't see at all?

About  Cattle Call is a high-speed animated documentary about the art of livestock auctioneering. Structured around the mesmerizing talents of 2007 Man-Sask Auctioneer Champion, Tim Dowler, and using a variety of classic and avant-garde animation techniques (including stop-motion, cut-outs, open-exposures, hole-punching and rubbing lettraset directly on the celluloid) filmmakers Maryniuk and Rankin have created images as dazzlingly abstract, absurd and adrenalizing as the incredible language of auctioneering itself. This hallucinogenic study of what Werner Herzog has termed 'the poetry of capitalism,' will induce near-bovine levels of dumbfoundedness in all those who gaze upon it.
