The Ecosystem of News
165 Attendees
Location Austin Convention Ctr
About  It is now conventional wisdom that the newspaper as we have come to know it for last century is over, or will be in a matter of years. The question is whether we're going to spend our time grieving over the loss, or whether we're going to use this moment as an opportunity to invent something even better. We're inevitably moving from the "paper of record" model to a something more distributed, a news ecosystem, but that doesn't mean we can't consciously define the shape of that system. So let's figure out what values we want to preserve from the older newspaper paradigm, and what values we want to improve upon -- and then let's go build it!

Plan B: Can an Ad Guy Bring Bike Sharing to America?

About  In increasingly turbulent times, it seems like more and more of us are wearing an extra hat or two in an effort to make a difference. Maybe that explains why Crispin Porter + Bogusky, one of the world's most respected advertising firms, has joined with Humana and Trek bicycles in an audacious plan to bring bike sharing to America with a new venture called B-cycle. All three companies share one common goal: positive cultural change. It's estimated that the U.S. could save 462 million gallons of gasoline a year by increasing cycling from 1% to just 1.5% of all trips. B-cycle can change the way we get around. And that can change our communities, our heath, our environment, and our future. Find out more about B-cycle and why Alex recommends we all begin sticking our noses in places where they don't belong.

The creation of multiple in-game editors that were easy (and fun) to use and the sharing of the resulting creativity via a social networking model had unique challenges. The team behind the networked features had to be flexible and iterative to modify the sharing, searching and ratings system in order to surface the best stuff and inspire continued growth for the community. About  Paul Carty is 19, good-looking, funny, clever Ð and bored out of his mind. His mother died a year ago. He lives in middle class suburbia with his silently grieving father and feisty young sister, Molly. Carty works as a junior civil servant and spends all his wages on clubs, records, football and gigs. It's at a Bunnymen gig that he meets Elvis. Elvis changes everything.
He's part of a gang called The Pack. The Pack are notorious; they dress in a cultish, almost effeminate style that's at odds with the boneheads and bootboys they fight against. They have androgynous wedge haircuts worn with Fred Perry shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills training shoes. For as long as he has been going to football, Carty has been fascinated by The Pack. Now Elvis seems to be offering him a way in.
Except he isn't. For all that Carty lionises The Pack, Elvis dilutes his idealism. He warns Carty that these lads are nobodies. Elvis is a council estate romantic, a dreamer with big plans about escaping to Berlin, New York, anywhereÉ Anywhere, so long as Carty comes with him. He's been waiting all his life for someone like Carty, someone he can talk with and relate to about art, music, poetry...suicide. They love the same bands - Magazine, Joy Division, Wire - and think the same way; or so Elvis wants to believe. He's smitten with his new mate and plans the big journeys they'll make together.
But Carty soon gets to know the 'other' Elvis - moody, fatalistic and possessive. He throws as many obstacles as he can in Carty's path, whenever he fears he's losing him. Elvis is all too well aware how badly Carty craves the Pack lifestyle, and tries to keep him away - but in spite of all his warnings, Carty's on a collision course, plunging deeper into their dark and vicious world. Elvis can see how Carty's fascination is blinding him, yet he's powerless to pull him back from the brink. Once he's been on his first awayday and sampled the buzz of random violence, Carty just wants more, more, more...
But Carty is never truly accepted by the gang. He's there on sufferance, simply because his sponsor, the psychotic yet enigmatic Elvis is so revered. Their conflict reaches its crisis as Carty tries harder and harder to impress the wild boys, while Elvis sinks deeper into paranoia and jealousy. Something has to break.

About  In a fever dream where hands are people, one hand fights the pleasure of the bottle by telling his story through song.
This classic tale of loss and woe features Pablo Ribba (illuminados para el fuego) as Adan the troubadour. Adan's innermost woe drives him from his lonely and tortured existence to the numbing satisfaction of the bottle.
In this world, one can almost hear the tortured cry of a soul in despair as Adan plays the guitar from place to place, his head hung low, his spirits sagging. The weight of the world virtually rests on his small shoulders.
Though, in this case, they are not only shoulders, but the most expressive fingers you have ever seen.

About  A robot lives alone in a tiny apartment. He's made a choice to be human, hoping that determination alone might allow him to make it so. He pretends to be a person, eating, laughing, talking with homemade dummies, all the while having no real idea why he's doing any of it. He figures there are just some things you do when you're human. He is given a vision. In the dream state he sees humanity for what it truly is, and realizes at once the error he's made. It isn't so bad, not being human.

About  Nerdcore rapper Terp 2 It hates the city of Orlando, Florida so much, he wrote the song 'Fuck This City' and then made a music video so everyone could feel and understand his hatred. Produced by internet comedy video group Studio 8, 'Fuck This City' turns the usual flashy hip hop music video conventions on their heads and smooshes you deep inside Terp's angry head. Yet lurking beneath the hearty mixture of no-holds-barred trash talk and abrasive imagery hides the goofy soul and wit of Terp 2 It. By the end of the video, you might find yourself wondering whether you should be more afraid for Orlando or for Terp, should the two ever cross each other's paths. 'Fuck This City' can be found on Terp 2 It's debut album The Freshest Dude from Studio 8 Records.

About  The music video "An Evening with Rthrtha" is a high-velocity psychedelic stop-motion animation made from thousands of photos on hundreds of layers using an eclectic array of analog animation techniques. The final result is a horrible/splendid array of bats, butterflies, that depicts "An Evening with Rthrtha".
As the band explained to the directors, "Rthrtha" is a large ancient and convivial pink bat that could fight large beasts on the order of Godzilla and Cthulu, but actually prefers a wild night out with friends.

About  The philosophy of materialism holds that the only thing that can be truly proven to exist is matter. Fundamentally, material composes all things and all phenomena are the result of material interactions; therefore, matter is the only substance and can neither be created or destroyed. Hence, we are all made of only what came before us yet discretely conceived through form; we are all made of earth and sky and stars.
Meridian uses time lapse footage coupled with a live action environment to describe the material connection between the ethereal universe and human perception. Featuring the track "The Daydream" by the ambient artist Tycho, star-scapes intersect a city and a female protagonist in the process of discovery within the context of ordinary life.

Blood Trail

About  At times war photographer Robert King resembles a heroic misfit straight out of the pages of Scoop, thrown into the heart of battle, struggling to adapt to the brutal environment he finds himself in. Occasionally comic, often touching, more often dark, Blood Trail, the tale of Robert King, is a unique and personal journey, a film which follows him over 15 years and through three wars.
His journey starts in Sarajevo in 1993, a 23-year-old fresh out of Art College and prepared to dodge bullets on the front line dreaming of a Pulitzer Prize. His dream proves elusive. Fired by his photo agency and struggling to make ends meet, any swashbuckling allusions Robert holds for the career he has chosen quickly evaporate: as he realises this is one of the toughest professions in the world.
Despite himself, Robert stays in the game, over time establishing himself as a respected professional, his work making the front covers of global media titles. Over 15 years Blood Trail records Robert's life from boy to man, to husband and father. It is a biography, which leads from reckless naivety to maturity hardened by war and softened by family. It is a story, which forces Robert to inevitably question why he chose a profession, which involves an endless trail of death and destruction.

About  The 1950's was an idealistic time in American History. It was also the Atomic Age where new technology promised to both save humanity as well as destroy it. All of these factors gave birth to the most prolific genres in film history, 1950's Sci-Fi Cinema. More then just little green men, 50's Sci-fi Cinema provided inspiration for the generation who achieved one of the greatest accomplishments of mankind; Spaceflight. Monsters From The Id weaves the intersecting themes of over 30 films in order to tell the untold story of the Modern Scientist and his role in inspiring a nation. The film continues to explore the psychological and cultural impact of 50's Sci-Fi cinema in America and asks, 'where is science inspiration found today?'
